This step is crucial—if not done properly, the shrimp might steal your bait, leaving your hook empty.
When you start shrimping, watch the bobber closely. If it moves up and down, don't pull your rod yet; the shrimp is just playing with the bait. Wait until the bobber starts to sink, then give it 5-10 seconds for the shrimp to eat the bait before pulling your rod. Always pull in the direction the bobber is pointing. Congratulations, you've caught your first shrimp!
This can be the most daunting part, especially as the shrimp flaps around. The humane thing to do is to remove the hook as quickly as possible. First, hold the shrimp by the back to avoid its two giant claws, which can cause a lot of pain if they snap at you. Use the countertop to bend their claws and lay them flat so they can't snap you, then slowly wrap you fingers around the shrimps to gain full control of the body. Once the shrimp is stable in your hand, use the other hand to remove the hook. Afterward, place the shrimp into the blue net in front of you in the pond to keep it fresh.
